however, before mine displays the original joomla icon flashes first…does anyone no how to stop that original joomla favicon from flashing up first before mine?

assuming you replaced (& completely removed) the old favicon icon, its most likely a problem with cache, either on you computer or the web host.
clear your own cache (in your browser) and go to administrator-tools-clean cache
