Why Would I Pay For A Website Per/ Mo. & Not Just Find A Free Server, And Use Joomla, python, etc. ? Help?

January 31, 2010 under FAQ

I just started learning about computers, It’s probably a really stupid Q, but I recently put a free 3 page site on the net. That started my addiction. Now I have been reading bout joomla and all the other free source stuff out there available. It seems I can put a website together for free and so what is the purpose of places that sell domains and web builders and all that. If I can used Apache or a place w/ a free server couldnt i do it all for free myself ? How do I get a domain name that is mine w/o any $$$ ?Is that it do I have to buy a domain name and then I can go from there?

    A good question.
Anything that comes free has some limitations. You find many people providing free website / hosting but there is a catch. Most of the times it comes with a subdomain or http://www.xyz.com/yourwebsite URL. This way there are many people including Google who facilitate website hosting free. The catch for the guys who give free is they need to hold the place for advertisements and their technology is the way. They provide tools to build the website. And you need to use only their tools and not your tools like Joomla.
However when you get this free stuff you will not get the hosting which can support Joomla Installation.
Joomla Installation needs Linux / Apache / MySQL / PHP. There are some hosting providers who provide free Joomla hosting but not too sure how far they provide service.http://www.freejoomlas.com you can see this website. And there are many sites which provide free “open source stuff” something like SMF forum free hosting etc.
But domain name, I am not too sure whether you get free of cost. You might get a domain name very cheap initially, you have to pay the price after second year onwards.

Yes, you can do it for free and that’s a great way to start out but as your needs increase, such as more space required, email, bandwidth then paid hosting is the way to get it because free hosts have a lot of limitations. It depends on what your needs are.
5gbfree.com is a pretty good free host that you may want to look into.
The only way to get a domain name is to buy it but there are some sites out there such as Domainlagoon where a person can get a domain name, good for a year, after filling out some surveys and stuff.
