Simple answer: if you need ACL, choose Drupal, if you don’t, choose Joomla.
Essentially, Joomla is easier to manage, has a lot more plugins (so will do more jobs), and is better for rich media publishing. It also has a lot more and a lot better templates. If your site’s appearance is important to you, then pick Joomla.
Drupal has much better ACL (access control levels / lists), so if you have different people editing content, you’ll need this CMS. It’s much harder to use and templating is more difficult. It handles high page numbers better though (ie over 10,000 pages).
Either will handle very high traffic as they are simply a bunch of PHP scripts. This is a server load-balancing issue. Don’t use the new Joomla 1.5 series as it’s still buggy, and with exploits. Not enough plugins either. Use Joomla 1.0.15, this is the best choice in CMS for multimedia work. I would advise an RT template if you want top-class presentation and media support.
Drupal is the solid choice if you have different user groups, who each own different sections. But don’t expect it to look as good as Joomla unless you get a pro designer in.
