   these sites list freelance jobs in Php, Joomla, and OsCommerce.
   select job of your choice and bid on the project.
   Complete the work and get paid via paypal, bank transerfer etc.

   I am also a PHP Developer for over 8 years. I am currently a Website Consultant working telecommute for a couple of companies whose websites run on osCommerce and Joomla.
   My suggestion is first create your own portfolio website. My website is http://www.FelipeLopez.net. Here you will show your portfolios, the websites you are working on, the skill set you have, etc. After creating your own website, optimize it for your area…like if you live in New Jersey, optimize your page for the Tri-State Area (New York, New Jersey & Connecticut). This way, when someone is looking for an oscommerce programmer in like say New York, your website will be on the top of Google rankings and they will contact you immediately.
   This is how I started then from there, I keep getting repeat clients and client referrals. I am now currently working on http://www.BestWholesalerPrices.com which is now a Featured Store in http://www.osCommerce.com.

   Craiglist and there was a site which has free lancers for hire or coders/programmers for hire. Forgot exactly, do a google.
