Joomla is terribly heavy. Writing the site yourself is much better because a) it’s lighter, b) you have much more control over the code and c) you understand it.
If you need something to help you, try Code Igniter.
joomla is not used by many web designer because
1 its more of a community portal for publishing articles and individuals normally prefers wordpress .
2 blogs are easy to manage and indexed more rapidly by google
