With the open source joomla license is it possible to completely rebrand every aspect of the software under the license? including the back end etc etc etc strip all reference to joomla for example and brand it as your own ?

Yes, it is possible to brand it as your own. Of course, your software MUST be licensed under the GNU GPL (Joomla’s license is GPLV2 at http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses… ) and MUST have clear notices in all files you change stating it has been changed (in the comments). Joomla itself is actually just Mambo with a few code changes so it won’t be the first time its changed.
No, they don’t give you the right to rebrand it. This would be stealing? Open Source gives the user permission to use it and edit the source code but not totally rebrand it.
