check out Fireboard. It installs right in Joomla and uses the Joomla user accounts without any integration issues.

joomla is most compatible with ‘fireboard’ and also can be clubbed nicely with ’smf’ .. although, for a completely integrated solution, i would recommend fireboard
Nothin out there is worth the pain of integration…at least, for Joomla 1.5. For my Joomla pages, I disable front end user registration, register my staff manually and set up a hidden door for them to log in. Then, I reserve the forums completely for the community side. Most of this is because I absolutely love phpbb3, and there isn’t any integration for that into Joomla 1.5 that is worth doing.
If you have Joomla 1.0, Fireboard completely integrates…but it lacks in the features department.
