Joomla! Extension Installation Problems?

February 22, 2010 under FAQ

Hi, I’m having some problem installing joomla extensions, such as templates and components. I am using 1.5 by the way. I try to install it using the package method, and stick the unzipped file in there, but nothing happens, nothing installs. Even when I unzip, it’s just a load of folders and css or whatever pages, so I can’t install those. I’m really stuck as to what to do. Any help would be appreciated. I feel like such an idiot :|

Have you resolved your problem? I had the same issue today, using Firefox. I tried it out in IE and suddenly the upload worked. Seems that FF is the problem, but I haven’t really found a real answer to what the issue is as yet. Just thought I’d share my solution as it might be an option for you or others experiencing the same problem.

Most Joomla extensions can be installed through the back-end administrator log in. You want the Extensions menu and Install/Uninstall. The easiest way is to use the Upload Package option. Unless the package is named “Unzip me 1st” or you’ve been instructed to do so by the extension maker, leave all packages in their archives. Click the Browse button and select the archive you want, then click on the Upload and Install button.
It will give you a message once the upload and installation is finished. Look for installed Components in the Component menu. All others will be listed in the Extensions menu in either the Modules section or the Plugins section. Don’t forget to enable Modules and Plugins after they’re installed.
All extensions and themes are installed this way, except where they tell you differently. Examples of that would be the RokBridge phpBB forums bridge, although except for only a few files the rest of the install is the same as above.
Joomla’s own Help system is actually very good. What you can’t find there may be available on the Joomla Documentation wiki.

Have you checked to make sure the extensions and/or themes weren’t already successfully installed? That’s the only situation I’ve seen where trying to install it (reinstall, though I didn’t figure it out immediately) failed to give some kind of message.
You can check the Install/Uninstall page and look through the installed Components, Modules, and Plugins to see if what you’re trying to install made it but isn’t showing up in the various extension manager pages. You can also uninstall it and try reinstalling it.
