Is Joomla The Best Website Builder?

January 20, 2010 under FAQ

For newbies that is. I’m a person who’d like to have more control over his/her own website and some of my associates swear by joomla. For a person just trying to wrap their head around website building for their own work, what software would you suggest? Is it joomla? If so, why not?

I am sorry to say this, but NO system is better than your own coding.
The best website builder? Notepad++, and good coding practices.
Joomla requires you to download 26Mb of code you would not even begin to understand (especially as a “newbee”).
Unless you are very proficient with Php, Joomla is a box full of Chinese code (no offence to the Chinese) - Let’s call it a “Pandora box”.
    BUT…
You need to be proficient with Php to use Joomla. But if you are proficient with php, you will realise that you can do that 26Mb of Joomla with 200K of code, exactly adapted to your needs.
    So… Why the overhead?
As a newbee, go to http://www.web2coders.com: you will find there a few free scripts that will help you understand the basics of coding.
    Try them, download them, experiment.
Problem? Register, post a question.http://www.web2coders.com has been created to help coders to learn how to code properly, and, accessorily, to offer jobs (at a later date).
    Good luck!

    WordPress is better for newbies.
Joomla can do more than WordPress, but it is more complex. If you’ve got the time to learn it, you’ll be fine..you’ll need to be somewhat computer-savvy and not afraid to mess around with it.
Anyhow, if you want easy, go with WordPress. Especially if you aren’t going to need extra features added in. If you need a bunch of add ons, shop around for addons for each product and make a decision based on who has what you need.
By the way, neither is really what I would call a “website builder”. They are content management systems…you operate them from the server that the web page is hosted on.

I love Joomla first off. I am also a very big wordpress fan. If you site is pretty basic and you don’t need to have different menus on each page and want to use a really simple content management system, them go the WordPress route. There are some tweeks you will want to do to make sure it is search engine friendly though.
If you have more sophisticated needs like rotating banners, different elements on each page, user logins forums… then go Joomla. If you do decide to use Joomla, I have some really basic tutorials on how to add content and such at: http://www.geekepic.com
