I am taking it you are looking at the default template that comes with joomla…
If it is the advertising banners you are talking about - you need to login into the backend of your joomla website - goto components and banners, there you will see all the banners on your website.
From there you can add/edit the banners as you please.
If it is the actual header image you are talking about simply right click the image with your mouse in your browser window and click properties, this will identify where that image is located in your joomla installation - normally it will be under /templates/name-of-template/images folder.
Simply replace it with your own using ftp software… if you have problems using ftp software locally then i highly recommend using the joomla component xplorer
