Installing Joomla into a specific folder will overwrite file index.php in that folder and will create a bunch of sub-directories (includes, images, …). If you don’t already have files with such names, that won’t affect your existing site.
Just uncompress it locally and compare to your existing file hierarchy.
If not sure, just upload it into a separate sub-folder under public_html.
