Make sure that the componet is for the version of Joomla you are running either Version 1.0.xx or Version 1.5.xx .
Components written for 1.5 won’t work on version 1.0.xx
safe_mode is a setting used within PHP that is supposed to help keep a server secure. If you are certain that safe_mode is causing the problem you should ask your web host to turn it off.
Safe_mode can be turned off using htaccess, if your host allows htaccess overrides. However, most hosts don’t allow htaccess to override their server security settings. Its best to ask them if they will turn it off.
There are other things that can cause problems with installing extensions - such as file ownership or permissions problems.
