If you are trying to make articles from word docs you will have to copy and paste or write a custom script to grab the data from word docs and insert articles into the Joomla! DB.
If you are uploading word .doc files to a folder for download, I recommend http://www.filezilla.com. Create a DIR(folder) in the Joomla! images DIR called whatever you want… “word_documents.” From there you can link to the files from within an article.
