Some Templates aren’t complete. Beware. Some just give you the basics to start building your own template. You shouldn’t need to unzip it. You should be able to go into the Admin Panel of Joomla and go to the template manager, and install the zip. It should then pop up under your current templates, and then you can make it the *default template. If you look around the web, there are lots of free templates, they should come in either a .zip or .tar.gz which should then install automatically using the template manager. Here’s some links for yah..
    http://joomlart.com
    http://www.rockettheme.com
    http://joomlaos.de/
There should be plenty of templates to find and download with those 3 links.
There is also the option in uploading the template folder to the Joomla site using FTP and then selecting it. Watch this tutorial for a little more help..

    Hope this helps.

you dont have to unzip it.
    1. Log in to your administrator backend of the site. The link to your administrator section should be like this: http://www.yoursite.com/administrator/ .
On the top, go to Site -> Template Manager -> Site Templates
    1. Select New from the options.
    2. Browse to your template’s zip file and select it.
    3. Then select Upload File & Install.
When the template has uploaded and installed on your site, select continue.
Now, let’s publish the new template.
Select the radio button on the Left of the Template name and after that click Default from the Menu to set it as your default template.
That’s it! Your template is installed and ready for viewing.
