I’m a joomla newbie. I’ve found a template with a great layout but the images are not to my liking. If I change the images and use it, will I be breaking any rule?

The template needs to be open source or you need to have the membership with the template provider.. you can easily change the images by going to your backed .. (i recommend using joomlaxplorer component)
I change images all the time, you should just ensure you leave the link to them and you will be fine.. Joomla is open source!
check the licence you ticked when you downloaded it
