Joomla is the worst for the learning curve. I can understand your want to use PHP as the basis, and to be totally honest, PHPNuke is a lot more user friendly. You will get the same structure, without the learning curve, and definitely without the misleading changes that you make to the site, that do not save the way you would expect them too.
